As summer heats up, the indie game scene is here to offer cool escapes into fantastical worlds filled with vampires, towering fortresses, and massive bugs. July brings a fresh wave of game releases, and we’ve curated a list of the most captivating and promising titles. With a diverse mix of art styles and genres, there’s something for everyone—whether you’re into strategy games or just love a good shooter. Let’s dive into the top indie games for July 2024.
Ark of Charon
Ark of Charon may not be directly tied to the mythical ferryman of the River Styx, but it promises plenty of fun. This game focuses on constructing a powerful mobile fortress to fend off waves of invaders. Your fortress is perched on a walking tree, and you’ll need to manage resources, build turrets, and more to keep it safe. It’s a unique concept, and you can try out the demo if you’re intrigued.
Cataclismo
Continuing the strategy theme, Cataclismo lets you build and defend a castle, brick by brick, against terrifying monsters. Inspired by LEGO®, the game challenges you to not only construct defenses but also establish production lines, train troops, and strategically deploy them. If you enjoy games that reward careful planning and punish mistakes, Cataclismo is likely to be a perfect fit.
EvilVEvil
Switching gears, EvilVEvil is a first-person shooter centered around vampire hunting. This game puts you in the role of a vampire hunter facing off against a cult of bloodthirsty creatures. Each vampire has unique strengths and abilities, and you’ll need to customize your weapons with supernatural enhancements to take them down. Plus, the game supports co-op play, which adds an extra layer of fun.
Gestalt: Steam & Cinder
July 16th is packed with exciting releases, including Gestalt: Steam & Cinder. In this gorgeous 2D metroidvania, you’ll play as Aletheia, a heroine navigating a hand-crafted steampunk world filled with clockwork golems and other dangers. Inspired by 16 and 32-bit classics, Gestalt offers a visually stunning experience for fans of the genre.
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is a stunning hand-drawn action platformer with Japanese folklore at its core. In this 2.5D action platformer, you fight through multiple mythical enemies – upgrading your powers as you go – as you try and fulfil an ancient prophecy. Whilst the action and platforming both look very slick, we’d be lying if we said that the main draw, at least ahead of release, wasn’t its gorgeous visual style.
Dungeons of Hinterberg
Dungeons of Hinterberg has generated a lot of buzz, and it’s easy to see why. This game blends dungeon crawling with puzzle-solving, platforming, and combat, all wrapped up in a stylish package. In addition to battling through dungeons, you can interact with locals to learn more about the game’s world, gain new skills, or just relax and enjoy the vibe. Expectations are high for this one.
Exophobia
Exophobia taps into nostalgia with its retro, old-school FPS design. Resembling an FPS that could have been made for the original Game Boy, this game is a visual throwback, offering a blue-and-red world to explore. As you blast through enemies, you’ll unlock new abilities, upgrade your alien weapon, and try to survive to the end.
